CARLING CUP

Africa’s most award-winning beer Carling Black Label, a proven leader in innovation and trendsetting, has constantly taken South African football to new heights for over a decade with highly anticipated football action that has given supporters of the beautiful game an opportunity to express themselves.

From 2011, when the pre-season Carling Black Label Cup was introduced, local football has never been the same. The Carling Black Label Cup was centered around the Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, offering their supporters the experience of having a big say in arguably the biggest game that local football has to offer.

Innovations such as the selection of starting line-ups, captains, substitutions, formations, as well as the inclusion of Champions coaches, all formed part of the amazing experience on match-day. Giving our Champions the opportunity to control their teams.

In 2022. Africa’s most award-winning beer Carling Black Label answered the call to make the tournament even bigger and better and, for the first time, there were four PSL clubs battling it out, voted for by supporters. Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned the champions, beating Orlando Pirates in the final at the one-day extravaganza played at a packed FNB Stadium. Just before the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

KNOCK OUT

The introduction of the Carling Knockout in 2023 as a major competition on the PSL calendar was further evidence of the extraordinary influence Carling Black Label has on South African football, with more innovations brought in to excite both players and supporters.

The R100 000 man of the match prize money for players, voted for by supporters, was a big talking point in South African football, as the Carling Knockout inspired the footballers to give it their all to lead their teams to victory.

One of the most exciting elements of the Carling Knockout was the Fak iGoal Uzobona innovation, which was aimed at energizing teams to produce earlier goals. At the start of each match, there was 90 minutes on the clock and R90 000 up for grabs. Supporters had to predict when the opening goal of each game would be scored and, with each minute that passed, R1 000 dropped with the potential prize money counting down to zero by the end of the game.

Supporters were also given an opportunity to vote for players to be included in the PSL All Star XI, which took on the inaugural champions of the Carling Knockout, Stellenbosch FC, in a Carling Cup clash at Peter Mokaba Stadium on 6 January 2024, seeing the Carling All Stars claim their first Carling Cup victory.

The PSL All Star XI included five DSTV Diski Challenge talents in the starting line-up, a platform for the future of South African football to showcase their talent against the Knockout champions Stellenbosch.
